Un fin de semana en Maastricht / Our weekend in Maastricht

¡Hola!

Hi! How was your week? Mine has been looooong, veeery looong. I couldn't wait for friday to arrive. This week it´s been a bit weird, I think it the crazy weather, changing all the time... Please miss Spring, come to stay and don´t drive us crazy!!

Maastricht Markt

In this post I wanted to talk about Maastricht. As I told you last week, I lived in Maastricht for a year three years ago, ufff time goes fast… I can see myself already telling stories… I have great memories of that time and some bad as well. I moved there because of work. After I finished my studies, my beloved Spain was not able to offer me any job, some of you may be familiar with this part of the story… So after some months looking for an internship, I got one in Maastricht and decided to move.

The year I spent working there was hard, but I like to think it made me stronger. I felt very isolated and lonely. I was super lucky to have Hajir with me and that Ana started to work there to rescue me. She always says I was like a gift for her, but actually she was my gift. She is one of the people I know I admire the most, she is unbreakable. I wish I had her mindfulness... Her peace and calm are contagious. Say goodbye was one of the most difficult things I had to deal with when I left. That and the perspective of looking for another job, in another foreign country, with a foreign language... great, isn't it? So Ana was the reason of our visit, well she, Antonio and Mario.

We were very lucky with the weather, because the worst part of living in Maastricht is the bad weather. It was a perfect weekend, wandering around the city to discover that nothing had changed, everything is the same. It was as we  never left, I felt at home.

Back to our trip, I will tell you what we did, but as we already know the city pretty well, is not the most touristic plan. We enjoyed the streets, the little squares full of cafes, the sun, the local shops, the river, the park... But if you are thinking about paying a visit, I would love to answer any questions you might have!

After 6 hours driving ( it should take only 4,5, but is what it takes to leave Stuttgart on friday, you are not the only one leaving... ) we arrive at dinner time. So we checked in at the hotel and headed to the center. We already knew where we wanted to go, Witloof. A belgian restaurant with a very special design, traditional belgian cuisine and over 350 different belgian beers. Every time we are in Maastricht we have dinner there. After dinner we went directly to bed, after all the driving I was dead.

On Saturday we had to wake up early because the car was not well parked. In the whole city you can only park a maximum time of 2 hours, so we left the car in the parking. The closest to the city center is Sphinx. Once the car was properly parked, we went to have breakfast at Zondag, a nice cafe-bar. If you go in spring or summer and the weather is nice, you can go to the terrace of the Coffee lovers behind the public library, the one looking over the river. First we went to the market square to see our former house, our windows were facing the square, it was a great place to live. And the rest of the morning we spent it shopping. We were amazed by the amount of local stores that we saw. The whole city is very commercial, so I don´t need to tell you where the shops are, they are everywhere! Also on the weekend there is an antiquarium market, close to the train station on Saturday and in the market square on Sundays. Ups! I almost forget to tell you that you have to visit the bookstore inside the Dominikanenkerk, is the most beautiful bookstore I know.

Cervezas Maastricht

Nosotros compramos principalmente cervezas.

We bought mainly beer. My favourite beer is the belgian one and I can not find it in Stuttgart. In Germany they are a bit strict with what they consider a beer must be. Only the ones brewed in a particular way can be so called beer, and it is difficult to find non german beer, at least in Stuttgart. So when we saw that they had open a handcrafted beer store , Hoppy, close to my old dutch school, we stepped in immediately. We took home a selection of beers produced in the city and its surroundings. We had already drank two and they are great!

We also bought some cheese and bread in Le Salonard, a cozy bakery in Rechtstraat. With such a beautiful shop window it was impossible not to come in.

After the whole morning walking, we went for a beer at Falstaff in Sint Amorsplain. Is our favourite place to drink something. We have spent a bunch of hours on this square, and it was also where I met Ana. Finally we ate there, after watching the waiter coming and going serving burgers I felt for one. And after lunch we met Ana and Antonio and we finally got to know little Mario, their gorgeous baby. They took us to a very cool place, kid’s friendly of course,  De Brandweer Kantine. It is a former fire station turned into a  cultural center with a canteen and daily activities. I didn’t have my camera with me so I borrowed the picture from their web.

We had dinner at their place, so we could catch up. Sunday was very relaxed, we walk through the park, had lunch and suddenly it was time to come back. The drive back was very quiet, there was not so much traffic  and it was very sunny, I love to drive this way.

I know I promised you I would take some decent pictures and I didn’t. I just felt for enjoying the city and not worrying about taking pictures.

At this point you might think, was this not a food blog?? Yes, normally it is, but sometimes  it turns into a diary. I hope you can forgive me, for next week I have prepared a delicious and fresh couscous. See you next week!
